Prediabetes ICD-9 (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification) is an older coding system used for classifying and coding diseases and health conditions.
However, as of October 1, 2015, the United States transitioned to ICD-10 for diagnosis coding.
In this article, I will navigate through the basics of ICD-9, its historical significance, and its application in coding for prediabetes, shedding light on its eventual replacement by ICD-10
Prediabetes ICD-9 Code
The full form of ICD-9 is an International Classification of Disease Ninth Revision, which means that it holds the details of a patient’s disease over a wide platform.
The ninth revision was invented by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for a better facility and clarification system by associating with hospitals in the United States.
The official code ICD-9 for diabetes is 790.29, where all the information about diagnosis and disease files remain. However, it lacks a record of the patient’s medical condition and complications.
Also, there is another code for Prediabetes and an unspecified type of condition related to a chronic disorder that falls under the range of Disease And Other Landscape criteria code 259-259.
It holds the mortality data of prediabetes in the United States and even issued death certificate details back in 1999.
ICD-9 features are considered ancient technology and it was replaced by ICD 10 because of new technology and digital facilities, but in 2020 it was also restored by ICD 11.
Basics of ICD-9
Hospitals in the United States use ICD-9 official system codes to assign diagnosis and procedures.
It helps maintain the code to classify mortality data by death certificate details, and (NCHS) the National Center for Health Statistics and (CMMS) agencies are responsible for overseeing the modification and changes of these codes.
Works of Prediabetes ICD-9
According to National Center for Health Statistics, the ICD-9 was created to transit the increasing granularity with five optional digit subdivisions and divided by four-digit level categories.
Here, I gather the important details of ICD-9 codes and how they used to work
- It arranges the medical data statistically with various lists of diseases
- You can translate the written terminology into a common language
- Contains a medical classification system for diagnostic, surgical, necessity, and therapeutic procedures accordingly

History of Prediabetes ICD-9
The history of ICD-9 has many variations as it was created by (DKM) Department of Knowledge Management and (WHO) to record the full medical history and reason of the death.
It was published in 1977 and used to be updated every October 1 till 1994.
Although it was divided into 3 volumes, because of the other unknown factors and complications of finding the medical records of the patient.
Prediabetes and ICD-9 Coding
After creating the 3 volumes, the first two were diagnosed codes, whereas the third volume contained procedural codes.
Still, this system never gained popularity and wasn’t widely used except in the procedural terminology department.
However, in 1983 everything changed as the “Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services” and the National Center for r Health Statistics both came together to resolve the issue of ICD-9.
And the third volume was declared as a prospective payment system to pay for Medicare programs in hospitals in the United States, it covers the elderly and chronic disease sufferers such as Prediabetes.
So when these diagnosis groups were admitted to hospitals, the payment was derived under ICD-9.
Difference Between ICD-10 and ICD-9 Coding
There are never-ending services that are offered by the health industry, and they have unique terms and characteristics.
ICD-9 and 10 are also terms that belong to the World Health Organisation, but ICD-9 was switched to 10 because of better facilities and services for you.
Below, I have mentioned the difference between ICD-9 and 10 for better understanding. And why nine was replaced and how Prediabetes ICD-9 lacks the details:
ICD-9 | ICD-10 |
Since used from 1975 to 1999 | Worked from 1999 till 2020 |
14,000 codes | 70,000 |
Prediabetes code is 790.29 | Prediabetes code is R73.09 |
Clinical Criteria for Prediabetes ICD-9
The International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, and Clinical Modification is a full form of ICD-9 CM, an official system of codes for assigned diagnoses and procedures in United States hospitals.
Moreover, the system may pivot from WHO once the ICD becomes the public domain because of the extremely high rates of prediabetes in the United States.
The Clinical Modification will aid you by providing the morbidity data and updating it frequently.
Remember that you need to understand clinical interpretation to acknowledge the most appropriate conversions between ICD-9 and 10.
Here, I will add how clinical Criteria manages this code.
- The tubular form is created to maintain a numerous disease in a list with code numbers
- Disease entries were made in alphabetical index order
- Category system for diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic procedures.
Wrap Up
While doctors used a code called ICD-9 to track prediabetes. This code grouped it with other blood sugar problems, not as its own thing.
Today, we use a newer code called ICD-11 that gives prediabetes its own special place. While the older code ICD-9 helped us learn about prediabetes in the past, the newer one helps us take better care of people with it now.
At the same time, extensive study has been undertaken on ICD codes, and many studies are now underway, with more to come in the next decades.
